Mathematics in IPC and IMYC

IPC and IMYC cover the study of mathematics from age 5 to 14. The strands within the subject are the following:

  • Numbers
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • Measurements
  • Statistics and data handling
  • Proportions, ratios and probability

Learners will develop an understanding of the application of mathematics in their everyday lives and potential future lives and careers. They will recognise, understand and use relationships, rules, patterns and structures. International learning includes the exploration of different procedures/methods for calculations.

Learners will be aware of the different units used for measurement and how language influences mathematics, such as telling the time. As well as meeting the Learning Goals, to be successful learners must:

  • Use appropriate vocabulary and subject-specific terminology
  • Connect learning within and between subjects, using maths as a tool for learning in all other areas (particularly science)
  • Engage with current affairs on a local and global level, including ethical issues of data representation
  • Make use of available, fitting technology including calculators
  • Demonstrate academic honesty
  • Apply all the Personal Learning Goals.

Reliance on the Hungarian National Curriculum

To ensure that Szeged IPS students also fully meet the requirements of the Hungarian National Curriculum in mathematics, children have complementary mathematics lessons in lower and in upper school. Mathematics lessons are based on the Hungarian National Curriculum using textbooks from MOZAIK, ensuring, if necessary, easy transition into the Hungarian education system in primary, and in preparation for secondary school.

In the last two years of upper school, preparation for the national secondary school entrance exams is also integrated into the timetable.
