Lower and Upper School

Lower school comprises grades 1 to 4:

Each class has their own class teacher, who stays and teaches most of their subjects throughout lower school but children also have subject teachers starting from grade 1.
Our small school and class size give children the opportunity to grow close to all the teachers in the institution.

Maximum class size: 15 children

  • The school day

Children have 5 lessons a day and 1 study period, during which they complete their homework. In general circumstances, children do not take home any homework unless study period is not enough to complete the work, which is very rare. The school week is comprised of 25 lessons and 5 study periods.

It is not necessary to take books home except for weekends and breaks to enable time for revision and practice. Lessons are 45 minutes long.

  • Learning English and Hungarian simultaneously

As currenty the majority of our students are Hungarian nationals, Hungarian Literacy and Grammar are built into the timetable. Thus, children learn to read, write and speak in both English and Hungarian from grade 1. Learning both languages simultaneously sets high expectations towards students but also provides a very strong foundation for the children’s Literature and Language studies in later years to come.

  • Assessment

Children receive a detailed, written assessment in every subject as part of their report card twice a year. Grade 1 students do not receive percentages for their work in any subject. Percentages are given to students from grade 2.

From grade 4, students reach Milepost 3 in their IPC studies, for which they are assessed not only in written form but also in percentages for each taught unit.

  • Free play

Children are given plenty of time for free play outdoors during the day and a range of extra-curricular clubs to choose from after school.

Upper school comprises grades 5 to 8.

Each class has their own class teacher; subjects are taught by subject teachers.

  • The school day

The build-up of the day is similar as in lower school with 5-6 lessons and 1 study period on some days. However, increasingly demanding subject knowledge often makes it necessary for students to have 6 subject lessons daily, leaving homework to be done in their own time.

  • Our approach

The knowledge, skills and understanding  established in lower school is deepened in upper school. Teachers provide even more opportunities for individual projects, team building tasks, ICT based work etc. Students are required to gradually take more responsibility for their work, the evidence of which can be presented in the form of various types of projects, oral and written assessments and the completion of larger amounts of homework – all of the above expected of our upper school students.

Most students in grade 8 prepare to enter the Hungarian education system to begin their secondary studies so we place great importance on the preparation for entry exams.

  • Assessments

As in lower school, upper school students receive a first and second semester report card with both written and numerical evaluation -in percentages- of their overall performance in core subjects accompanied by History and Science. IMYC units covered are also assessed in percentages.

To ensure the possible transition into the Hungarian education system at any given time, we can supplement our report card with an insert of our written assessments converted into grades used by Hungarian schools. This will be done upon the request of the selected school.
